Dropshipping what it is and how it works?
Dropshipping is a method of retail compliance in which a store does not keep the products it sells in stock. Instead, when a store sells a product using the dropshipping model, it purchases the item from a third party and ships it directly to the customer. As a result, the seller does not have to handle the product directly.
The major difference between dropshipping and the standard retail model is that the selling merchant does not stock or hold inventory. Instead, the seller buys inventory as needed from a third party, usually a wholesaler or manufacturer, to fulfill orders.
7 Benefits of Dropshipping
Dropshipping is a great business model for aspiring entrepreneurs because it is accessible. With dropshipping, you can quickly try out different business ideas with limited downsides, allowing you to learn a lot about how to choose and market products on demand. Here are some other reasons why direct shipping is such a popular model.
1. Less capital required
Probably the biggest advantage of dropshipping is that it is possible to launch an e-commerce store without having to invest thousands of dollars in inventory in advance. Traditionally, retailers have had to tie up large amounts of capital purchase inventory.
With the direct shipping model, you do not have to buy a product unless you have already made the sale and the customer has paid you. Without significant initial investments in inventory, it is possible to start buying products and launch a successful dropshipping business with very little money. And because you’re not committed to selling through any pre-purchased inventory, as in a traditional retail business, there’s less risk in starting a dropshipping store.
2. Easy to start
Running an e-commerce business is much easier when you don’t have to deal with physical products. With direct shipping, you don’t have to worry about:
- Manage or pay for a warehouse
- Packaging and shipping of your orders
- Inventory tracking for accounting purposes
- Handling of returns and incoming shipments
- Continuous product ordering and stock level management
3. Low Overheads
Because you don’t have to deal with buying inventory or managing a warehouse, your overhead is quite low. In fact, many successful dropshipping stores operate as home-based businesses, requiring little more than a laptop and some recurring expenses to operate. As it grows, these costs are likely to increase but will remain low compared to those of traditional brick and cement companies.
4. Flexible Location
A direct shipping business can be run from anywhere with an Internet connection. As long as you can easily communicate with suppliers and customers, you can run and manage your business.
5. Wide selection of products to sell
Since you don’t have to buy the items you sell in advance, you can offer a variety of fashionable products to your potential customers. If suppliers have an item in stock, you can put it on sale in your online store at no additional cost.
6. Easier to test than in an online store
Dropshipping is a useful fulfillment method both for a new store launch and for business owners looking to test customers’ appetite for additional product categories, for example, accessories or entirely new product lines. The main benefit of direct shipping is, again, the ability to list and potentially sell a product before committing to buy a large amount of product for your inventory.
7. Easier to upgrade your business
With a traditional retail business, if you receive three times the amount of orders, you usually need to do three times the work. By taking advantage of drop shipping vendors, most of the work to process additional orders will be done by the vendors, allowing you to expand with fewer growth challenges and less incremental work.
Sales growth will always bring additional work, especially related to customer service, but companies that use dropshipping scale particularly well compared to traditional e-commerce companies.
5 Disadvantages of Dropshipping
All of the benefits I mentioned earlier make dropshipping a very attractive model for anyone starting out with an online store or for those looking to expand their existing product offerings. But like all approaches, dropshipping with Aliexpress also has its drawbacks. Generally speaking, convenience and flexibility come at a price. Below are some shortcomings to consider.
1. NOT much profit margin
Low margins are the biggest disadvantage of operating in a highly competitive vertical dropshipping. Because it’s so easy to get started and overhead costs are so minimal, many competing stores will set up a store and sell items at very low prices in an attempt to increase revenue. Because they have invested so little to start the business, they can afford to operate on minuscule margins.
Generally, these vendors will have poor quality websites and poor customer service (if any), which you can use to differentiate your business. But that won’t stop customers from comparing their prices with yours. This increase in fierce competition will quickly damage potential profit margins in a niche. Fortunately, you can do much to mitigate this problem by selecting a niche/vertical that is suitable for direct shipping.
2. Inventory problems with your supplier
If you stock your own products, it is relatively easy to keep track of which items are available and which are out of stock. But when you stock up from several warehouses, which also fulfill orders from other merchants, the inventory can change daily or even hourly.
Fortunately, these days, there are a handful of applications that allow you to synchronize with vendors. Therefore, drop shippers can “pass” orders to a supplier with one or two clicks and should be able to see in real-time how much inventory the supplier has.
Alidropship plugin also allows merchants to take automated action when a supplier’s stock reaches zero. For example, when a product is no longer available, you can automatically cancel the publication of the product or keep it published but automatically set the quantity to zero.
3. Shipping Complexities 🚚
If you work with multiple vendors, as most dropshipping vendors do, the products in your online store will be obtained through several different dropshipping vendors. This complicates your shipping costs and delivery time. It is possible that the end customer will receive all your products on different dates, which can annoy your business.
Suppose a customer places an order for three items, all of which are available only through independent suppliers. He will incur three separate shipping charges for sending each item to the customer, but it is probably not prudent to pass this charge on to the customer. And even when it makes sense to include these charges, automating these calculations can be difficult.
4. Supplier Errors 🤦
Have you ever been blamed for something that wasn’t your fault, but had to accept responsibility for the mistake anyway?
Even the best dropshipping providers make mistakes when fulfilling orders, mistakes for which you should take responsibility and apologize. And poor quality, mediocre suppliers will cause endless frustration with missing items, failed shipments, and poor quality packaging, which can damage your company’s reputation.
5. Personalization and limited branding
Unlike custom-made products or print on demand, the direct shipment does not give you much control over the product itself. The product is shipped directly is usually designed and marked by the supplier.
Some suppliers can adapt to your company’s product changes, but even then, the supplier has the greatest control over the product itself. Any changes or additions to the product itself generally require a minimum order quantity to make it viable and affordable for the manufacturer.
